Nightsongs

"Prayer" (Langston Hughes); "Drums of Tragedy' (Langston Hughes); "The Heart of a Woman" (Georgia Douglas Johnson); "Night Song" (Clarissa Scott Delaney); "Sence You Went Away" (James Weldon Johnson); "Creole Girl" (Morgan Collins). [Orchestrated 1988.] 20 minutes. Flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon; 2 horns; timpani; percussion; harp; medium solo voice (mezzo soprano or baritone) and strings.    


Five Millay Songs

(Edna St.-Vincent Millay) "Wild Swans", "Branch by Branch", "For You There Is No Song", "The Return from Town", "Gone Again is Summer the Lovely". [Both this and Nightsongs orchestrated in 1987.] 12 minutes. Flute / piccolo, oboe, clarinet, bassoon; 2 horns; timpani, percussion, harp, medium solo voice and strings.

 

Dunbar Songs

(Paul Laurence Dunbar.) "The Meadow Lark", "He / She Gave Me a Rose" and "The Valse." [1981] 15 minutes. Flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon; 2 horns; timpani; percussion; harp; high voice; and strings.

 

The Meadow Lark

(From Dunbar Songs, see above.) [1980] 5 minutes. 2 flutes; 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons; 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, percussion; high voice; strings.
 

Hymn to Freedom

Cantata for Soprano, Tenor and Baritone. [Texts by Paul Laurence Dunbar]. In two movements, I. "When Storms Arise" and II. "Lead Gently, Lord". [10 minutes] Woodwind (doubling piccolo, B flat clarinet, bass clarinet and E flat alto saxophone; B flat trumpet, tenor trombone and bass trombone or tuba (doubling string bass); piano; percussion (doubling timpani, bass drum, vibraphone, suspended cymbal, tam tam, glockenspiel and tubular bells) soprano, tenor and bass baritone vocalists; 2 violins; viola, cello and double bass.
